Pheromosa Analysis for Series 12 (VGC 2022)

The return of IRL events has seen the Series 12 metagame develop rapidly over the past few months, with the likes of Palkia, Reshiram, and Yveltal all posting great results in the recent regionals. This is no doubt a breath of fresh air (albeit small) that is much appreciated by the mature metagame.

The introduction of Crowned Zacian and Shadow Rider Calyrex accelerated high Speed play, and along with it narrowed the already limited list of Pokemon that could naturally outspeed the most common metagame behemoths. How does Pheromosa fare in this exclusive family?

It is a trio of similarly fast and frail Pokemon, with Regieleki leading the pack due to its unmatched Base Speed. However, Pheromosa offers much better coverage, plus a valuable yet unique set of utility moves to keep it in contention despite barely qualifying.

The Bug and Fighting STAB combination is a rare commodity that is equal parts good and bad. While having an advantageous matchup against common support Pokemon like Incineroar and Rillaboom, Flying, Ghost, Poison, and Fairy Type Pokemon resist it with ease. How would Pheromosa fare when compared to its compatriots?

Pheromosa sets itself apart with its high Base Speed and Special Attack, even if it lacks a reliable Fighting Type STAB in that spectrum. However, its frailty means that it cannot be relied upon for drawn-out skirmishes, unlike the likes of Assault Vest Buzzwole.

If not already obvious, Pheromosa has a few innate flaws that prevent it from running away with the competition. Players interested in harnessing its gifts will have to pay attention to these hindrances lest they lead Pheromosa into a horrible matchup.

  • Paper-thin defenses
    • The lopsided Base Stat distribution means that if Pheromosa isn’t securing a KO, it is likely the victim of one. Making its turns count is therefore of utmost importance to any Pheromosa player.
  • Flying Type Pokemon
    • A crippling 4x Weakness to Max Airstream is not a nice thing to have in the age of dynamic Speed. With its common abusers resisting both of Pheromosa’s STAB, this makes the matchup an exceptionally horrible one.
      • Charizard, Zapdos, Thundurus Incarnate, and Yveltal all come to mind as the top representatives of this category. Of the quartet, Charizard poses the biggest threat, since Pheromosa’s Ice Type coverage only hit it for neutral damage.
  • Trick Room and Speed manipulation
    • Pheromosa’s biggest selling point lies in its high Base Speed, so any measures that cut into that advantage really put the Lissome Pokemon in a bind.
      • Trick Room setters like Dusclops, Mimikyu, and Ice Rider Calyrex are nasty propositions in their own right. The first two resist Pheromosa’s STAB combination, with Mimikyu commonly carrying Mental Herb to negate the effect of Taunt (once). Ice Rider Calyrex may be weak to Bug Type moves, but its high Base bulk and access to Dynamax means players will always have to be careful of accidentally triggering its held Weakness Policy.
      • Grimmsnarl can easily neutralize Pheromosa’s Speed advantage through Prankster elevated Thunder Wave or Scary Face. Similarly, Regieleki can slow it down with the fastest natural Electroweb in the format.

While Pheromosa can be slightly tricky to manage, the tricks that it brings to the table are very much valuable. With a nice array of moves to choose from players would need to optimize for a set that fits the need of the team. Sample construction templates are provided below:

Pheromosa @ Focus Sash
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
– Coaching / Taunt / Speed Swap
– Feint / Protect
– Icy Wind
– Skitter Smack

A supportive Pheromosa build. Icy Wind and Skitter Smack both work wonders at slowing down the opposition, with the former a slight improvement on Electroweb (which Pheromosa also learns) since no Pokemon is immune to it. Options for the third move slot include Coaching, which is great to help buff an allied powerhouse (like Crowned Zacian), Taunt to deny opposing Trick Room and/or setup, or Speed Swap as a makeshift measure of Speed control. The latter is particularly interesting, for it has the power to free slow behemoths from Trick Room, or punish opposing Trick Room play. The last slot is then a coin flip between Protect and Feint.

Pheromosa @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
– Bug Bite / Lunge
– Close Combat
– Protect
– Triple Axel

A set that taps on the powers of Dynamax and Weakness Policy to turn Pheromosa into a speedy juggernaut. Access to Triple Axel means Pheromosa can run a pure Physical set, which is more devastating now that it can rely on Close Combat instead of Hi Jump Kick. Bug Bite might be an odd pick, but it can prove to be inspired when used against switches: losing a held Berry on the switch cuts heftily into the victim’s bulk. Players can run alternatives in its place, like STAB Lunge, or coverage options like Foul Play, Throat Chop, Drill Run, and Bounce.

Pheromosa is powerful and can put in a shift even when on supporting duties. However, it is not as splashable as some of the metagame greats out there. As such, it is usually seen with a select pool of teammates that synergize well as a core. Fantastic candidates would include:

  • Kyogre / Solgaleo / Crowned Zacian / Ice Rider Calyrex
    • This section features some Restricted Legendary Pokemon that would work well with Pheromosa.
      • Considering Kyogre’s poor matchup, having a teammate that can make short work of the Drummer Pokemon is very important. Pheromosa can also use Speed Swap to turn Kyogre into a speedy monster, which is great for smashing the Fire Type threats to the Lissome Pokemon.
      • Solgaleo’s Full Metal Body makes it a rather nice recipient of Coaching, which Pheromosa can use before most opponents. Considering its unique but simultaneously awkward Speed tier, Speed control through Icy Wind (or Speed Swap) is fantastic support for it. Pheromosa can also help it snipe down Ground Type threats like Groudon and Landorus Therian. Dusk Mane Necrozma is in a similar category, though it is more compatible with Speed Swap for operating under fast mode.
      • Ice Rider Calyrex’s salivating Base Stat distribution has only one flaw – that low Base Speed of 50. Now imagine it with 151 Base Speed instead.
  • Sylveon / Comfey
    • Players looking for a quick and easy way to trigger Weakness Policy on Pheromosa should look no further than the duo of Sylveon and Comfey. Sylveon, while slow, achieves the feat through Pixilate Quick Attack. It is also pretty strong on its own to function as a secondary striker on the following turn, allowing it to better capitalize on the Max Move boosts/nerfs. Comfey, on the other hand, does so through Triage Draining Kiss. This allows players to more reliably get the trigger since the combination occurs before Follow Me and most Fake Out.
  • Indeedee F
    • No matter how fast Pheromosa is, it cannot outrun moves with increased priority. This is a concern, considering Pheromosa’s horrible defenses. Against hard Trick Room teams, where the Trick Room setter is usually partnered with a Fake Out user, Pheromosa’s strengths are hard to utilize before Trick Room is set up. Hence, Indeedee F and her Psychic Terrain become rather valuable. The Emotion Pokemon can extend the support further through moves like Follow Me and Helping Hand. In return, Pheromosa helps Indeedee F manage Dark Type foes (mainly Incineroar).

Regigigas Analysis for Series 12 (VGC 2022)

“There is an enduring legend that states this Pokémon towed continents with ropes.”

Who knew that a noxious cloud was all that Regigigas needed to unlock its full potential? With Slow Start out of the equation, the Colossal Pokemon can finally make full use of its whopping Base Stat total of 670. For comparison, this sees Regigas tie with Kyogre and Groudon! But just how strong is Regigigas at its full potential?

Restricted Level bulk, above-average Base Speed, with a Base Attack that gives Groudon a run for its money. All that and more, without taking up a precious Restricted Legendary slot! All it asks for in return is that you keep Weezing on the team (battlefield), which honestly isn’t a bad trade-off.

Despite having a ridiculously good Base Stat distribution for a “regular” Pokemon, Regigigas is not without its flaws, with some exceedingly obvious. Players will have to pay attention to these hindrances lest they lead Regigigas into a horrible matchup.

  • Heavy Reliance on Neutralizing Gas
    • Regigigas is a huge burden due to its Slow Start. Hence, its operation revolves nearly exclusively around Neutralizing Gas – Regigigas’ offensive capabilities take a HUGE hit in its absence.
  • Status Afflictions
    • While not absolutely critical, Status afflictions can seriously mess with Regigigas’ performances. Sleep incapacitates the Colossal Pokemon, while Burn halves its damage output. Paralysis, while unassuming, is arguably the biggest hindrance, since it wipes Regigigas’ Speed advantage over important threats like Kyogre and Groudon.
  • Steel Type Pokemon
    • Steel Type Pokemon are nuisances for Regigigas, and it is not completely due to their defensive prowess.
      • Solgaleo and Dusk Mane Necrozma are two commonly seen Weakness Policy holders. They tend to be bulky enough to withstand a Max Darkness or Max Quake, then retaliate with a +2 Max Steelspike of their own.
      • Crowned Zacian is much faster than Regigigas, with STAB Behemoth Blade powerful enough to 2HKO even at neutral. When used as part of a double target, players might find themselves losing Regigigas for relatively nothing!

Regigigas has obvious strengths and weaknesses to be exploited. Set optimization would therefore be an important factor in determining how well Regigigas is going to perform in Series 12. A sample construction template is provided below:

Regigigas @ Life Orb
Ability: Slow Start
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
– Darkest Lariat
– Giga Impact
– High Horsepower
– Wide Guard

Self-sufficient Regigigas set. Darkest Lariat and High Horsepower cover nearly every Pokemon that resist (or is immune to) STAB Max Strike. However, players who find Thundurus Incarnate and other Dynamax prone Flying Type Pokemon problematic can opt to run Rock Slide instead. Wide Guard is chosen as the final move for some viability out of Dynamax or Neutralizing Gas.

Defensive Calculation

252 Atk Zacian-Crowned Behemoth Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dynamax Regigigas: 194-230 (52.4 – 62.1%) — guaranteed 2HKO

Regigigas’ unique properties mean that it is usually seen with a select pool of teammates that synergize well as a core. Fantastic candidates would include:

  • Weezing
    • The only Pokemon with Neutralizing Gas is a must pick alongside Regigigas. Most opt for the Kantonian variant, since Weezing in this form has fewer Type Weaknesses.
  • Kyogre / Crowned Zacian / Shadow Rider Calyrex
    • This section features some Restricted Legendary Pokemon that would work well with Neutralizing Gas cores.
      • Kyogre absolutely detests having its Weather overridden, for it simultaneously shreds its damage output. Neutralizing Gas becomes valuable here for nerfing Groudon switches, forcing the opponent to change the Weather manually through faster Max Moves or Sunny Day etc. Neutralizing Gas also nullifies Storm Drain, allowing Kyogre to wreak havoc with Max Geyser undeterred.
      • While Intrepid Sword is suppressed when Neutralizing Gas is active, switching out Weezing means all other Pokemon’s Abilities trigger (or retrigger). Ingenious exploitation can allow players to activate Intrepid Sword twice!
      • Shadow Rider Calyrex’s signature Ability (shared with Ice Rider Calyrex) is the only one that is immune to Neutralizing Gas. This allows the High King Pokemon to continue to exert immense pressure.
  • Regieleki / Blastoise / Amoonguss
    • This section features a group of regular Pokemon that work well to plug the gaps of a Neutralizing Gas core.
      • Regieleki’s high natural Speed allows it to Volt Switch before most foes to bring in Weezing for Regigigas to ditch Slow Start mid turn. Its high Base Speed also synergizes well with the Restricted Legendary Pokemon that aren’t penalized by Neutralizing Gas.
      • Blastoise isn’t typically reliant on its Ability, and has many tasty skills to boot. This would include a powerful G Max Cannonade that would not want to be redirected (and/or nullified) by Storm Drain and co; Yawn, Helping Hand, and Fake Out.
      • The prominent members of a Neutralizing Gas core tend to trend on the faster end of the Speed spectrum. As such, a way to handle Trick Room would be much appreciated to prevent the team from getting overran by a hard Trick Room core. Enter Amoonguss, one of the slowest Spore users available. Pollen Puff adds to the equally classic Rage Powder, which gives the player a lot more manoeuvrability under Trick Room.

Registeel Analysis for Series 12 (VGC 2022)

“Its body is harder than any other kind of metal. The body metal is composed of a mysterious substance. Not only is it hard, it shrinks and stretches flexibly.”

The combination of STAB Max Steelspike and Body Press has made for a strong win condition when many top tier candidates made their return in the Crown Tundra DLC. Throw in Clear Body, and it becomes even more potent, as this facilitates the snowballing of an unbeatable juggernaut. In this regard, how does Registeel fare amongst its brethren?

Registeel can be loosely considered as a defensively oriented Metagross. It makes up for the lack of firepower with its better bulk, as well as not being as vulnerable to Dark Type and/or Ghost Type moves as Metagross does.

Despite Registeel being phenomenal defensively, its stark collapse in popularity in Series 12 indicates underlying factors that chip away at its strengths. Interested players will need to have a good understanding of these inhibitors if they want to make investing in Registeel worth their effort.

  • Sacred Sword, Critical Hit, and/or Unaware
    • While Iron Defense (and/or Amnesia) + Body Press is typically wonderful for bulk, opponents can bypass that through measures like Sacred Sword (which hits Registeel for super effective damage), landing Critical Hits, or with an Unaware Pokemon.
      • Sacred Sword hits Registeel for super effective damage, in addition to ignoring its Defense buffs. The most prominent user is Crowned Zacian, which is annoying since Registeel would have otherwise had a favorable matchup against it.
      • Critical Hits ignore the targets’ defensive buffs, making it easy for Registeel players to see their painstakingly accumulated gains be for nought through (un)favorable RNG. Case in point, Urshifu. Both of its forms come equipped with a signature move that is guaranteed to result in a Critical Hit (bar Shell Armor and co.), which allows them to shred through Registeel with ease.
      • Unaware, while reasonably rare, is another measure that can stifle Registeel. The one to watch would be Quagsire, which comes armed with Ground Type STAB to hit Registeel for super effective damage.
  • Ghost Type Pokemon
    • Players who run Body Press as the sole damaging move on Registeel will see the Iron Pokemon hard walled by Ghost Type Pokemon like Dusclops, Mimikyu, and Shadow Rider Calyrex.
  • Fire Type and/or Ground Type Pokemon
    • While Steel Type is the best defensive Type, it is not without vulnerabilities. Listed below are the two most common threat categories, and their respective headline act(s).
      • Gigantamax Charizard resists Body Press and has the notoriously powerful G Max Wildfire in its arsenal. Ho-Oh is another similarly positioned member of the Fire Type family, whose Sacred Fire has a whopping 50% chance to inflict a Burn.
      • Groudon, Gastrodon, and Landorus Therian are the three most prominent Ground Type threats in Series 12.

Registeel’s relative passiveness outside of accumulated boosts can make it a difficult Pokemon to pilot. Designing a set that exemplifies its strengths and obscures its weaknesses would therefore be imperative to optimizing its performances in Series 12. Sample construction templates are provided below:

With only a measly 75 in Base Attack (and Special Attack), the Weakness Policy is the main way for Registeel to deal meaningful damage and/or OHKOs. Steel Roller takes over as the primary STAB option for its higher Base Power. The next coverage move falls between Rock Slide and Ice Punch to aid Registeel against airborne threats like Zapdos and Thundurus Incarnate. The final coverage move is taken up by Stomping Tantrum, which is Registeel’s main way of dealing with Steel Type opposition like Crowned Zacian.

Regice isn’t a complete dud, but it is similarly not the shining light that can dominate the metagame. With Crowned Zacian ruling Series 12, interested players would need to find a way to slot Regice onto their teams without compromising too much. Fantastic teammate candidates would include:

  • Dusclops / Hitmontop / Mimikyu
    • While Regice has amazing Special bulk, its low Base Speed of 50 means that it really prefers to operate under Trick Room.
      • Dusclops and Mimikyu are two great options that players could run as (one of) their team’s Trick Room setter(s), with both boasting immunity to Fake Out. Dusclops’ Frisk is great for scouting for more information, while Mimikyu’s Disguise helps to limit the number of ways the opponent has left to deny Trick Room.
      • Hitmontop’s value as a Trick Room enabler is no mystery to the VGC veteran. Regice, for one, really appreciates the now infamous Fake Out + Intimidate combination, as well as other supportive options like Helping Hand, and Vacuum Wave. The latter is a great way for players to trigger a held Weakness Policy on Regice!
  • Groudon / Shadow Rider Calyrex
    • This section features some Restricted Legendary Pokemon that would work well with Regice.
      • While Groudon’s Drought amplifies Regice’s Weakness to Fire Type moves, the Continent Pokemon makes up for it with its superior matchup against the Steel Type threats that annoy Regice to no end. Regice returns the favor by managing Groudon mirrors, as well as Grass Type adversaries like Gigantamax Venusaur and Rillaboom.
      • Shadow Rider Calyrex’s high Base Speed would seem to put it at odds with the much slower Regice, but their synergy doesn’t have to be. The High King Pokemon can be a surprise Trick Room setter, but besides that, it is highly valuable for handling the likes of Solgaleo and Dusk Mane Necrozma. Being naturally faster than Crowned Zacian also gives the team an additional measure against the most dominant Pokemon ever created.
  • Liepard
    • In terms of finding the best partner for Regice, players should no further than Liepard. A fast Dark Type Prankster user with Fake Out, Liepard has a variety of ways to aid Regice. Need to soften the damage taken from a Physical hit? Charm away! Need to get that KO? Try Fake Tears! Opposing Solgaleo running away after a Weakness Policy boost? How about Foul Play? Players could even try out the likes of Burning Jealousy or Yawn, if they can find room for these moves!
